Butchers (DR Congo)
-
-
These men are butchers employed at a slaughterhouse in Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The slaughterhouse is open 6 days a week and the cattle are brought in mostly from Rwanda. Some men are veterinarians who check the meat for disease after the slaughter.
The slaughterhouse is located on the border with Rwanda in a deep valley where women transport the majority of the meat. They carry it on their back – about 50kg a time – often up hills for miles to distribute it to the local markets.
